Can a Tempur Mattress Freeze? My Surprising Winter Discovery
Today I learned that a Tempur mattress can freeze! This is something that I never thought I would have to deal with.
We popped into our country house today after being gone for a few weeks. I thought I would let in a small bit of the gray ‘light’ we get here in the winter, but when I hopped onto the bed to reach the window shade, I thought, “Did we put a sheet of wood under the covers for some reason and I forgot about it?”
But it wasn’t a memory issue, it was a memory foam issue. Who knew? It seems that Tempur mattresses can freeze when the weather gets too cold. Of course, our bed is indoors, but I suppose when the weather has been -13 for a few weeks, it tends to get a little chilly inside.
So Why Does a Memory Foam Mattress Freeze?
It turns out that memory foam is sensitive to temperature. While it’s designed to conform to your body and provide comfort, it also relies on a certain level of warmth to stay soft and flexible. When exposed to extreme cold, the material can harden. For the record, I don’t remember the salesperson mentioning this fun fact.
What to Do if Your Tempur Mattress Freezes
If you ever find yourself in my situation, don’t worry, it’s not permanent. The foam will soften again once it warms up to a comfortable temperature. Here’s some tips on how to solve the problem if it happens to you:
Heat the Room
Place an extra electric radiator in the room with a timer you can operate from your phone, so that you can heat the room a few hours before your arrival.
Avoid Jumping on the Bed
I know jumping on beds is fun, but if your bedroom is cold and you have a Tempur mattress. Don’t do it, man.
Let the Kids Sleep There Instead
Kids aren’t picky. Plus, they’ll think it’s a special treat that they got to sleep in the parent’s room, which is usually off-limits.
The Bottom Line
So, what did I learn from this? Mainly that the country I live in is just too cold. But also, if you have a cabin you don’t visit often, remember to pile absolutely every blanket you own on top of your bed and maybe invest in an electric blanket for emergencies.
