Free Soup?

Last week, I was walking back to work when I saw a food truck. Food trucks have just appeared in Stockholm during the past couple of years, so I was excited to see what this one would be.  I walked over and saw people getting very large cups of fancy chicken soup (with cilantro and sesame seeds).  I couldn’t find a price anywhere.

A man walked up to me and asked if he could help.  When I asked how much the soup cost, he said, “Free!”

Thought 1:  Do I look homeless?  Is this for the homeless?

I gave him a long look just waiting for the catch.

He said, “The soup is free and if you’d like some advice, we’re happy to give it!”

Thought 2: A cult?  Do you want me to join your cult?

My Swedish was a little cloudy, but I finally figured out that this had something to do with the environment and more environmentally friendly heating systems.

I gave him a hearty nod and my interest with the classic, “I’ll have to tell my husband about that.”

And then – Score!  Free chicken soup!

  1. I would have been extremely suspicious of free soup, because besides the two aforementioned reasons (homeless and cults) why would anyone hand out such good soup for free?

It looks so tasty. Was it tasty?

    • It was excellent! I walked by the same spot yesterday but of course there was no free soup. So sad. That soup was so good I might have considered joining their cult. 🙂
