Forms for children

I got a hold of some more Life magazines from the 1960s.  I like this form for children to fill out.  Everything is going along nicely until…… WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE VIETNAM WAR?! PUT DOWN THAT JUMP ROPE AND ANSWER ME NOW BILLY! (Race problems?  Well, I guess I always come in 3rd … Read more

Straight E’s!

I just realized that I forgot to report how I did in my most recent Swedish class. I got an E! No kidding.  The email said, “You have received a grade of E.  Have a nice summer!” I was sort of hoping that “E” stood for Excellent, but apparently it’s the new grade between D … Read more

Cheap vacations

My cousin once took her young son to the Lego store at the Galleria and let him play there for an hour.  When he was done, she told him that now he could tell his friends he had been to Legoland over his summer vacation. Using the same strategy, I think I should be able … Read more

If I could save time in a …..

The whole family was riding in the car listening to Jim Croce’s “If I Could Save Time in a Bottle.”  I was thinking of the beautiful lyrics, the meaning, the lovely tune, and then my youngest son said…. “Why does he say ‘If I could save time in a BOTTOM?  Ewwww!”

Visions of the future

My youngest son has decided what the ultimate future should be.  He has the common ideas at first, but then it turns into great ideas of a 7 year old mind: 1. Teleportation 2. Flying cars 3. New flavors of chocolate 4. Bathtubs full of Fanta

Impressions of Texas

When we were in Sicily last month, a waiter asked where I was from.  When I replied that I was from Texas, he said, “Ah! Pistolero!” His stereotype is actually correct so I couldn’t say anything.  Funny to think what comes to people’s minds with different countries.

Slip-N-Slide

When I was growing up, there was a new water toy called the Slip-N-Slide that you could set up in your own backyard for hours of fun during the summer.  One of my neighborhood friends had a nice, flat yard which was the ultimate place for the long, yellow tarp filled with water for kids … Read more

Umm… thanks?

My oldest son says, “Mamma, if I had to choose between you and an iPad, I would pick you.  An iPad is an object, not a person. And besides, we have two.”t

In my day….

….we didn’t have these fancy Nintendos and iPhones.  We rolled down a hill and we liked it!  Get rollin’ boys!

But is he Texan?

So what would the equivalent of this be in Sweden?  Should I cover our car in Swedish flags and Abba stickers?  Maybe an ad for Absolut Vodka on the back?

Colonel Bubbies

One of our favorite stores in Galveston, Texas is closing at the end of the summer.  It’s an army surplus store called Col. Bubbies and it’s filled with old scary military items from around the world and the occasional cat roaming around.  It’s a strange store to have in a beach town, but perhaps that’s … Read more

Kids with cameras – Part 2

Continuing on the theme of my kids’ vacation photos: Here we have “lawn chair.”  Apparently this is fascinating to my children.  Probably because we neither have a lawn or a lawn chair back home.

Kids with cameras

I like to give my kids their own camera to take pictures on vacation.  It’s always interesting to see what impressed them when I get home and load the pictures into the computer.  Here’s a lovely picture from last year’s trip to Texas.  These are flies in the Waffle House.  I think my kids are … Read more
